04 - Michigan, Madonna Louise Ciccone

The Legend that changed the music and video culture, not just for women performers, but for all. Born in Michigan, she took the world by storm continuing to define her sound and music. Even days ago releasing her fourteenth (14!) album, Madame X! See information about the album here.

Michigan was the third of three states to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment on June 10, 1919.

Madonna Louise Ciccone took over the music scene in the 1980s as the music video and expression grew to a pop culture epidemic. She trained among dance leaders throughout New York with Alvin Ailey and the Patrick Hernandez Revue. She met Dan Gilroy, and together they formed “the Breakfast Club”, a pop/dance group. She played in multiple groups until being signed by Kamins to Sire Records in 1982 to begin her solo career.

Her image, sound, and personality grew, taking over a heavily male-dominated music scene. She also entered the film industry with her debut film “Desperately Seeking Susan” with many films throughout her career.

Madonna continued to develop her brand and persona through many years through fashion design, children’s books, health clubs, and film making. The changing of her styles and expressions maintain her relevance in today’s culture and within the time of her life. As she grew personally, she used her experience and following to raise awareness for youth, in particular Malawi, Africa. She contributes to various charities, having founded Ray of Light Foundation in 1998 and Raising Malawi in 2006.

According to Billboard, Madonna is the most successful solo artist in its Hot 100 chart history. She is also the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility, Madonna topped VH1’s countdown of 100 Greatest Women in Music. Additionally, Rolling Stone listed her among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time.

Why this woman?

It is hard to think of a person raised in the 80’s and 90’s not being impacted by Madonna. She was a constant icon. She changed the realm of music as image and video went hand in hand. Never turning from the adventure, she was the role model of all young gen’xers.

Growing up, she was risqué to me, always going beyond what I was able to conceive, sometimes beyond my comfort zone. She continued to redefine women in the public scene. I cannot remember a time that Madonna was no a part of my life. To see her reinvent herself every year keeps her relevant, powerful and innovative.
